I want to study at MSA because I
think that, being a joint school between UoM and MMU, it offers a broad access
to many facilities and tools that will be useful for my career. Moreover I
think this uniqueness can place MSA amongst the top architecture schools in the
UK. Additionally, Manchester has a very student-friendly environment that makes
this city a very pleasant place to study and have an enriching experience.
Furthermore, I think the booming environment of Manchester is a good place to
start exploring architecture while helping me discover and experience it in a
unique way.
A week ago I visited “The City” in
London and saw many of the buildings that create this city’s skyline. Being a
major financial and business centre, the empowering environment created from
the greatness of the buildings constructed there matches their significant purpose.
Mixing innovation with usefulness, buildings such as “the Gherkin”, “the Cheese
grater” and “the Walkie-Talkie” express the ever-evolving atmosphere of this
place. My personal favorite was “the Cheese grater” because of its distinctive
shape and elegant structure that makes it a unique invention. I think its
defiant attempt to differ from other buildings makes it stand out.
A couple of years ago I went to
Barcelona and visited La Sagrada Familia, the architectural masterpiece by
Antoni Gaudi. This building is the only one of its kind because of the amount
of different materials it has been made of and the detail that every single
piece of the structure has. Moreover, every side of it has a different theme,
which means every side has a different, distinctive look while still preserving
the shape of the whole building. I find this is an incredible achievement, and
the fact that so many years have passed since its construction started and it
is not yet finished shows how incredibly complicated and unique this
construction is. La Sagrada Familia can definitely be considered Gaudi’s legacy
and a great contribution to architecture.
Although I visited Barcelona, I
did not get time to visit everything I wanted. Amongst many of Gaudi’s works of
architecture, one that is a “must visit” for me is Park Guell. This is a public
park that was Gaudi’s first attempt at creating shapes inspired by nature,
which helped him discover his personal style. In order to learn more about the
history and legacy of Gaudi, who I consider to be my favorite architect, I
think that the place where he unleashed his architectonic genius and lead him
to create his most iconic work, La Sagrada Familia, is something that I should
not miss if I get the chance to see it.
